Intra-muros is the historic heart of Saint-Malo. This is where you’ll find the ramparts, the cobblestone streets, the granite houses, and that unique atmosphere for which the city is famous. Staying in Intra-murosmeans experiencing Saint-Malo from the inside.

It’s very convenient because everything is within walking distance: restaurants, shops, walks along the ramparts, and access to the sea. The atmosphere is particularly pleasant at the end of the day, when the tourists leave and the city regains its relative calm. I did say “when the tourists leave” because during the day it’s very crowded. Evenings can also be quite lively. So it’s Saint-Malo at its best, but you need to have a good place to sleep or not mind seeing crowds. It’s an excellent choice for a romantic getaway or a weekend, because the atmosphere there is truly unique and meant to be experienced as a couple, especially a cozy moment on the Bastion de Hollande while gazing out at the sea.

  • Nearest beach: Bon Secours Beach
  • Maximum distance to the beach: approximately 500 meters

Here are a few places to check out in Intra-Muros:

Hôtel de la Citéa great option if you're looking for a hotel in a prime location within the Old Town, convenient for exploring everything on foot. Expect to pay generally around €110 to €170.

Staying at Le Sillon: the sea as far as the eye can see

Le Sillon is the quintessential seaside neighborhood. It features a long promenade facing the sea, lined with hotels, many of which offer ocean views. If your goal is to enjoy the beach, this is undoubtedly the best choice.

It’s called Le Sillon because it used to be a sandbar that was covered by the sea at high tide, thus protecting the residents within the ramparts by cutting them off from the mainland. Ingenious, isn’t it? The neighborhood is a great place to walk, run, or simply enjoy the view of the sea. It’s the place to be, especially during spring tides and particularly near Rochebonne at the very end. The atmosphere here is more open and brighter than within the city walls. It’s a very popular area among couples and those who love seaside getaways.

Staying in Courtoisville: peace and quiet with quick access to the ocean

Courtoisville is often considered a quieter extension of Le Sillon. The neighborhood is right behind it. It’s residential and more peaceful, yet still very close to the sea. It’s somewhat of a family-friendly neighborhood. It’s an excellent choice if you want to avoid the hustle and bustle while staying close to the beach and downtown. It also has a nice advantage: unlike Intra-muros, it was barely bombed during the Liberation, so it has retained its seaside charm with lovely apartment buildings and beautiful villas.

On a tight budget

If your main goal is to pay as little as possible, you should generally avoid Intra-Muros and the most desirable locations in Sillon, which are the most popular areas. To find more affordable rates, it’s best to look at convenient hotels in Saint-Malo, ParaméSaint-Servan, or even nearby towns like Saint-Jouan-des-Guérets. With this in mind, you might consider, for example, establishments such as B&B HOTEL Saint-Malo Centreibis budget Saint-Malo Centre or even Première Classe Saint-Jouan-des-Guérets if you’re willing to stay a bit further from the center. On average, you should expect to pay around €80 to €110 per night to stay within a reasonable price range, depending on the time of year.

With a moderate budget, you’re in the sweet spot to truly enjoy Saint-Malo without paying top dollar. You can then consider Saint-ServanParamé, certain properties in the Sillon district, or well-located hotels that aren’t quite at the high-end. It’s often in this category that you’ll find the best balance between location, comfort, and charm. For example, you might consider Hôtel Anne de BretagneHôtel de la CitéHôtel Alba Saint-Malo or even L’Adresse depending on your preferred neighborhood. With that in mind, you might want to check out Le Nouveau MondeGrand Hôtel des Thermes, or some other lovely spots with ocean views. What about vacation rentals in Saint-Malo?

Vacation rentals are often a great option in Saint-Malo if you’re looking for more space, a kitchen, multiple beds, or simply a more flexible stay than a hotel. For the best balance between location and charm, Intra-Muros remains very appealing, especially for a short stay without a car, but prices there rise quickly. For better value for money, it’s often worth looking toward Saint-ServanParamé, or some quieter areas near Rothéneuf, where you can find larger, more peaceful, and sometimes better-equipped accommodations for the same budget. For a family, the best choices are often ParaméSaint-Servan, or the slightly more residential areas around Saint-Malo, as these often offer more space, tranquility, and convenience, especially if you’re traveling by car or with children.

Yes, and it’s often a great idea. Within a radius around Saint-Malo, there are many vacation rentals that allow you to either pay lessenjoy more peace and quiet, or have more space than if you stayed in the city’s most popular areas. The most appealing towns are often Dinard, for its elegance and seaside atmosphere, Cancale, if you enjoy the harbor, the sea, and a more peaceful atmosphere, Saint-Coulomb, for its quieter setting between Saint-Malo and Cancale, or Saint-Jouan-des-Guérets, which is very convenient if you’re traveling by car and are looking above all for good value for money. For families, expanding your search around Saint-Malo is often a good idea, as it’s easier to find larger, quieter accommodations there that are sometimes better suited for stays of several days.

🚍 Getting around in Saint-Malo

Since many of you are arriving by TGV (the trip from Paris takes 2 hours and 35 minutes), here’s a guide to how public transportation works. It’s worth noting that getting around Saint-Malo is quite easy, even without a car. The city is compact, and there are several options for easily traveling between neighborhoods such as the Old Town, Le Sillon, Saint-Servan, or Rothéneuf.

The main public transportation network is the metropolitan bus system, known as MAT (Malo Agglo Transports), which serves the entire city and surrounding towns with several regular routes and an on-demand service ().

👉 To view routes and schedules and plan your trips, you can go directly to the Saint-Malo bus network.

The main lines make it easy to connect:

  • the races
  • inside the walls
  • the beaches
  • neighborhoods such as Paramé or Rothéneuf

Some routes are very well served, with frequent buses that make it easy to get around the entire metropolitan area.

For short trips, walking is often the best option, especially between the city center and Le Sillon. Cycling is also a pleasant alternative along the coast.

In short, you can visit Saint-Malo without a car, especially if you're staying in a central neighborhood or near the sea.
